Distant Thunder - A Life Remembered
Epilogue
"The road has been long, with many turns and passing scenes and vistas. Sometimes I can still hear the air raid sirens of London echoing in the distance. Hear the bombs, the roar of airplane engines, the smell of burnt gunpowder and the joyous freedom of racing the wild winds across the heavens. The contented smells and sounds of milking a cow with my head leaning into her flank as dusk settles on the land. Plumbing the depths of my love for each of our children and their children. Remembering how they felt...the tenderness and the delicious cheeks ripe for kissing. The pride in seeing them blossom.
There were many times I didn't think I would survive...but somewhere something or someone took my hand.
Although I still have miles to go before I rest, the fire that raged within me has subsided, and my life has taken a quieter, more peaceful turn as I head toward the greatest adventure of them all.
Down through the canyons of time come the faint echos of a life once lived. Time moves on...not pausing for any man.
And yet, as leaves tumble in the wind and the days grow short, I still hear distant thunder. I look off at the horizon, waiting for something.
The fire may be gone...but the coals are still there, and still alive."
